OUR CHURCH HISTORY
Temple Baptist Church of Temple, Georgia, had it's
beginning on November 1, 1884. Four men and
eleven women submitted their church letters on that
date. These charter members were J. M. Daniel, S.
B. L. J. McClung, Mary E. Stallings, A. V. Riggs,
Sarah Crocket, Amanda Jones, Saphronia Stallings,
Harrietter Vandergriff, Margaret Vandergriff, Susan
Phillips, and Anna Vandergriff.
These members named a building committee at their
first meeting. They designated the fourth Sabbath
and the Saturday before it each month as meeting
days. J. M. D. Stallings was elected as the first
pastor and served until October, 1889.
The first church building was a wooden structure
located several yards west of the present church
site. The present brick building was constructed
in the early 1900's.
In 1939, four Sunday school rooms were added to the
east side of the building and stained glass windows
were added to the auditorium. A Sunday school
annex was built in 1967. In 1974, the church voted
to change its name to First Baptist Church of
Temple.
In 1979, the sanctuary was remodeled again and in
1995, a renovation project of existing space was
undertaken. In 1979, a 95 year celebration was
held with Dr. Searcy S. Garrison preaching.
We would like to give thanks to the many who have
so ably led this church in the past. We look
forward to the future as we continue to serve God
in the days to come.
